Overview
40 Degrees South is a trad-style acapella group now in its fourth decade singing traditional and trad-style folk songs. While mostly known for their repertoire of maritime songs and shanties, they also sing songs of Australian colonial history, songs with industrial themes, gospel songs, and traditional chorus songs.
They are regulars at the National Folk Festival and have performed at festivals around Australia and overseas. In June 2023 they performed at the Connecticut Sea Music and Old Songs Festivals in the USA.

Reviews
“What a blessing and a bonus (in these times) to hear the 5 of them singing out their souls for us. Hurrah, boys, Hurrah!” - (from an audience member in the USA)
"Thanks very much for the CD Crossing the Line, which arrived a few days ago. Very interesting and enjoyable I found it too. Great singing and a fine selection of songs, many of which I’d never heard before… or certainly not in the form that they appeared in on your recording....Overall a damn’ good CD." - BoB Watson (UK)
"The four singers Margaret Walters, Chris Maltby, Don Brian and Tom Hanson are stalwarts of the folk music scene in Australia and beyond. They support each other with rich harmonies as each takes a turn with the lead. They are long term collaborators and their voices blend superbly...the singers present the songs so clearly that few listeners will fail to grasp the words." - Tony Smith (Bathurst)
At our most recent performance at the St Albans Folk Festival, audiences appreciated our banter, our wide-ranging repertoires, our harmonies and choruses.
