Overview

Azadoota is a vibrant worldbeat band with a mission: to bring the Assyrian spirit to the global stage. Founded by Iraqi-born Robin Zirwanda, whose Assyrian ancestors can be traced back 7000 years, Azadoota performs original songs in Assyrian Aramaic—an ancient language now under threat of extinction.

Robin is recognised throughout the Assyrian diaspora as a cultural ambassador. His songwriting explores heritage, displacement, betrayal, and love, delivered with both passion and playful wit. Backed by a tight rhythm section and infectious dance grooves, Azadoota’s sound is uplifting and irresistibly danceable.

Three generations of musicians share the stage, including 16-year-old Josh on keys, helping to usher in a cultural renaissance for one of the world’s oldest surviving peoples. The band performs in costumes inspired by the splendour of ancient Assyrian royalty—an eye-catching nod to their proud identity.

With members drawn from the Assyrian diaspora across the globe, Azadoota has lit up festival stages for nearly 30 years with their colourful, groove-based energy. Their 2018 invitation to perform in the U.S. under the “Culturally Unique” visa program affirmed their rare role as cultural emissaries.

Hits like Khaled and Bruni have delighted audiences at home and abroad, showcasing the band’s signature blend of driving percussion, catchy hooks, and cheeky humour. Azadoota doesn’t just perform—they transform audiences, turning curiosity into connection and dance floors into shared celebration.
